Sunday, June 7 Recap
We started this Lord’s Day with worship at Christ Community Church in Anchorage. Pastor Tracy Simmons delivered a message on prayer from 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “Pray without ceasing.” Christ Community is in fellowship with the Chugach Baptist Association and the Alaska Baptist Convention. One of the things I couldn’t help but notice as we have driven around the Anchorage area is how few churches there are. I guess it’s not surprising considering that Alaska is statistically ranked as one of the least religious states with one of the lowest percentages of church attendance in the country according to a study from The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. You can read a story on it in the Anchorage Daily news at http://www.adn.com/life/religion/story/463303.html. It stands in stark contrast to East Tennessee where there are churches on every corner, yet reminds of us what an opportunity exists to win souls for the Lord.
We need to be in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Alaska as they reach out to others with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Christ Community is one of those churches reaching out to the lost and we felt the Spirit of God move as they welcomed us into their church Sunday.
After changing and eating we went to the Chugach State Park at Eagle River. You can check out some web sites at http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/ and http://www.ernc.org/. We walked a 3 mile trail and took in the beautiful scenery. I’ll have pictures up shortly.
We also drove up to Hatcher’s Pass and the Independence Mine State Historical Park. It was simply breathtaking. I’ll post pictures of it also. Here’s a link to the lodge which has some information and other links, http://www.hatcherpasslodge.com/.
We had a late dinner and made it back the dorms at UAA around 11:00 p.m. local or 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. I can’t imagine how confused our body’s clock will be when we return.
Monday we will be working at the Boy’s Home.
